Behind the Scenes

Lord of the Rings

Two towers

I decided to watch the behind the scenes of Lord of the Rings Two Towers. Lord of the Rings is my hands down favorite movie of all time, so I thought it would be cool to see how it was all put together. The movie won best visual effects, so as you can assume, the behind the scenes is unreal. Lord of the Rings was filmed in New Zealand. The landscape is incredible, and what I found most amazing was that almost every set had to be made. For example, the woods where we meet Treebeard is not a real forest. They made a scaled down forest with over 140 trees. Treebeard himself took so many people to make. There were multiple different models that eventually came into the Treebeard that we love in the movies. He is actually a robot, that they animate and make look so real. They scale down Treebeard to fit in the forest, and Pippin and Mary actually are being held by the robot. Pippin and Mary are awesome. Watching them behind the scenes was really funny. They are pretty much the same characters in real life. Always joking around, always talking, and always having fun. They seem to be best friends in real life as well.  Would love to spend a day with them in real life.

I think that the most amazing set in the whole film has to be Rohan. Rohan is city on a great hill in New Zealand. The set was all made just for the movie. It looks like an actual place in the world. And apparently, it was all torn down after the movie. It must have taken them an enormous amount of time to make that set. It also must have taken an enormous amount of people. One thing that surprised me a lot was just how many actors were needed for Orcs. Orcs are nasty and ugly beasts. They play the part of evil in the movies. But, the Orcs require a very large amount of makeup. I don’t even understand how such an ugly creature could have been thought of. It was cool to see my favorite characters work on the set. They were obviously famous, but they seemed very cooperative and easy to work with. My favorite character, Legolas, seemed like the man. In fact, every character and person working behind the scenes, seemed really awesome.

I plan the watch the behind the scenes of the other movies in the trilogy as well. Specifically, The Return of the King. The final battle in that movie must have been the most difficult thing to film. I can’t even imagine it. I mean, Legolas climbs a giant elephant at one point, how did they film that? I highly recommend the Lord of the Rings to anyone who likes anything. It is THAT good. And if you watch it, you have to watch the behind the scenes to understand just how much work was put into the trilogy.
